Can an ATS resume have columns or a two-column layout?
No — this is one of the most common format mistakes. ATS parsers read text linearly from top to bottom. A two-column layout causes the software to read across both columns simultaneously, scrambling your experience into unreadable text. Use a single-column format only. It looks simpler, but it passes every ATS parser reliably.
Can an ATS resume have color?
Minimal color is generally fine for ATS parsing — color itself does not break parsers. The problem is that colored elements are usually created with graphics, text boxes, or design elements that do break parsers. If you use color, apply it only to plain text headers. Avoid colored backgrounds, graphic elements, or icons. When in doubt, go with plain black text on white.
Should an ATS resume include a photo?
No. ATS software cannot read images or photos — they are either skipped or cause parsing errors. More importantly, photos introduce potential bias into the hiring process, and many US companies explicitly exclude resumes with photos for legal reasons. Leave the photo out entirely.
Can an ATS resume be 2 pages?
Yes — page length does not negatively affect ATS scoring. ATS software parses the full text of your resume regardless of page count. The two-page rule is a human preference, not an ATS requirement. If your experience justifies two pages (generally 8+ years of relevant experience), two pages is fine.
Does my ATS resume score actually matter?
Yes, significantly. Research consistently shows that resumes scoring below a threshold — typically 60-70 on most ATS platforms — are filtered out before a recruiter reviews them. A score of 35 and a score of 75 are not both 'reviewed with different outcomes' — the 35 usually never gets seen.
